The inscriptions on the two sides of the herm ensure correct identification of the characters: Epicurus (342/341-271-270 BC), the philosopher from Samos and founder of one of the most popular philosophy schools in Hellenism; and Metrodorus of Lampsacus (331/330-278-277 BC), his favourite pupil.
