  • Inclined plane

Adopted as an alternative to lifting machines, the inclined plane was a widespread system for moving large weights in Antiquity. The load was placed on a wooden ramp and drawn by means of cables pulled by a large number of workers. The device slid on traverse or wooden rollers laid out along the route.

The model demonstrates that the traction force required to move a load changes according to the inclination of the plane.
