  • Portrait bust of Marcellus

M. Claudius Marcellus, the nephew of Augustus and the son of Octavia and the Consul C. Claudius Marcellus. He was a direct descendant of the Consul who conquered Syracuse in 212 BC and returned home with substantial spoils of war, including Archimedes' splendid sphaera (planetarium), mentioned by Cicero and later displayed in the Temple of Virtus, outside Porta Collina. Hugely saddened by the great scientist's death, Marcellus - according to Livy - went to enormous pains to give his remains a worthy burial.
