This helmet was found in August 2011 with another eight not far from the rostrum inv. no. 3874, approximately 7 km west of the island of Levanzo, during research conducted by the Soprintendenza del Mare della Regione Siciliana and RPM Nautical Foundation. The discovery of helmets and rostra produced the certainty that this is the site of the Battle of the Aegates Islands. The helmet can be classified as the type known as Montefortino.
