The steelyard is a special weighing instrument based on the principle of the lever. Unlike the balance, its suspension beam is asymmetrical. A small mobile weight is free to slide on the longest part and balances the weight of the object placed in the only pan. This allows different objects to be weighed with the same mobile counterweight, differing from the balance with equal arms in which the object being weighed must be balanced against an equal weight.
