  • Medallion with a bas-relief bust of “Archimedes”

A fragment of relief portraying the facial profile of an elderly philosopher was inserted into the frame of a Verde antique medallion in post-Ancient times. The philosopher was now identified as Sophocles. Engraved in capital Greek letters on the only surviving portion of the original relief is the name Archimedes, with whom the portrait was long identified. However, the inscription may not be original but executed in the 17th century.
