A new type of amphora (Dressel 1) came into use starting from the middle of the 2nd century B.C., as evinced by finds along the entire coastline of the western Mediterranean. They document the triumph of slave-based agriculture on a vast scale, whose most productive districts were southern Etruria, southern Lazio, and Campania. In Gaul alone, between the middle of the 2nd century B.C., and the following century, at least 40,000,000 amphorae were unloaded, for approximately 100,000 hectolitres of wine a year: an amazing volume of trade, demonstrated also by the great number of wrecked ships (over sixty) filled with Dressel 1 amphorae found along the coast of France.
