Around 1150, an unknown Arab author composed a treatise in which he set out by saying it was a faithful translation of Archimedes' work On Water Clocks. A key focus in the ancient discipline of pneumatics, studies on water clocks received a major boost in Alexandria in the mid-3rd century BC, a time when Archimedes is believed to have stayed in the Egyptian city.
