Head of Dionysus in the form of a bull

2nd century A.D.

This portrait shows Dionysus in the iconography handed down by the sources, which associate the god with the bull, symbol of potency and fertility. In the Greek city of Elides, Plutarch reports, Dionysus was venerated in the guise of a bull.
