"On the opposite side of the earth from the northern pole is the Antarctic, and it derives its name from the Greek anti, which means the same thing as contra in Latin. The southern pole also goes by the names Noticus and Austronoticus. The southern pole cannot be observed by us because of the curvature of the earth that slopes downward, but the pole is visible from the antipodes (the existence of which has been established)."
