Small altar
Small cylindrical altar, with decorative moulding along the base and upper cornice and Doric style relief frieze in the middle. The decoration with festoons is painted in fading red and blue. This piece reproduces the large stone altars on a smaller scale. The type is widespread in areas of worship and in private houses. Witness to the latter use is the intimate and private nature that characterizes religiosity in the Hellenistic period, which, in Sicily, centred primarily on the cult of Demeter and Kore.
